2019
A participative musical theatre of the Collectif Barbare in cooperation with the Künstlerhaus Boswil, the project UMA (unaccompanied underage asylum seekers) of the network Asyl Aargau and Künstlerhaus Boswil.
The first and only time the unheated Alte Reithalle in Aarau is staged in winter. In “Winterreise”, the famous cycle of Romantic poems by Wilhelm Müller, which Franz Schubert set to music in the autumn of 1827, one year before his death. A stranger, a seeker, sets out into the freezing, snowy winter night after parting from his beloved with no goal or hope in the world. The wanderer embarks on a journey accompanied by darkness and melancholy, alone with his dreams and longings.
In this production of the Collectif Barbare, the figure of the lonely wanderer becomes an allegory of today’s loss of belonging and direction. The audience literally embarks on a voyage into winter. Wrapped in woollen blankets, they journey from station to station and experience how young performers from all over the world bring Schubert’s songs to life – a fragile, sensual and poetic play with the clinking cold.
